Started in 1992, Ballantyne was a vision ahead of its time. Originally, the land was used as a large hunting tract for the family of John Harris, descendants of former North Carolina Governor Cameron Morrison. Nestled along the North Carolina and South Carolina border in South Charlotte, it was one of the first master-plan communities in the area, started by John Harris and Smoky Bissell. At the time, Interstate 485 was only in the planning stages, but Harris and Bissell understood the potential of this interstate frontage.
2,000 acres were rezoned into what would become Ballantyne Corporate Park, Ballantyne Country Club (owned by developer Crescent Resources), Ballantyne Village, and Ballantyne Commons East. Included in the master plan were hotels, including the Ballantyne Hotel, and an award-winning golf course. Four pillars at the intersection of Johnston Road and Ballantyne Commons Parkway mark your arrival into Ballantyne. These 30-foot pillars were designed by Boris Tomic, an artist from Yugoslavia. These pillars represent finance, transportation, technology, and human spirit in Charlotte.
Today, Ballantyne still epitomizes the original theme of “live, work, play, and stay” with offices home to Fortune 500 companies, a variety of housing options including condos, townhomes, and single family homes, plentiful restaurant options, and medical offices. A short drive to Uptown Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Ballantyne offers a great mix of convenience and community!
